Acne
A common skin disease that causes pimples, which form when hair follicles under the skin clog up. Most pimples form on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. Anyone can get acne, but it is common in teenagers and young adults.
Allergies
These may include atopic dermatitis, hives, rashes, and others. A person with allergies has an oversensitive immune response to certain substances (allergens), wherein chemicals called histamines are released. This usually causes itching, swelling, hives, rashes, and other symptoms, which may vary from person to person. James River Dermatology utilizes a variety of effective treatments to manage allergies in patients.
Actinic Keratosis
A skin lesion that appears as a rough, scaly patch on your face, lips, ears, back of your hands, forearms, scalp and neck. The cause is frequent or intense exposure to UV rays, typically from the sun. Actinic keratosis enlarges slowly and usually causes no signs or symptoms, yet it is considered to be precancerous because it can develop into skin cancer. At James River Dermatology, we use the latest methods available to treat actinic keratosis. Therapies vary depending on the nature and extent of your condition.
Cancerous Lesions
James River Dermatology provides precision surgical removal of all types of cancerous skin lesions, including basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer and melanoma.

Dermatitis/Eczema
Includes several different types of skin swelling. Dermatitis is not dangerous, but most types cause red, swollen and itchy skin. Factors that can cause dermatitis/eczema include other diseases, irritating substances, allergies and genetic makeup. James River Dermatology provides both topical and other treatments for this condition.
Hair Disorders
Can include infection of the hair follicles, hair loss, excessively oily or dry hair/scalp, and many other conditions that can affect the health and appearance of the hair. We perform a thorough assessment to identify the source of the problem and deliver treatments tailored to your individual needs.
Keloids
These are the excess growth of scar tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. They can be minimized using steroid injections, or cryotherapy. They can also be surgically removed.
Moles
These are clusters of pigmented cells that often appear as small, dark brown spots. Most moles are harmless, but in rare cases, may become cancerous. James River Dermatology can monitor moles, determine if they are cancerous, and provide expert removal if necessary.
Nail Disorders
These can vary widely, and include nail discoloration, fungus, ridging, cuticle damage, and more. Treatments include changes in diet, supplementation, topical treatments and others. Psoriasis usually appears on the elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet, but it can show up on other parts of the body.
Rashes
Rashes include several different types of skin swelling. Rashes are not dangerous, but most types cause red, swollen and itchy skin. Factors that can cause rashes include other diseases, irritating substances, allergies and genetic makeup. James River Dermatology provides both topical and other treatments for this condition.
Rosacea
A long-term disease that causes redness and pimples that affect the skin and sometimes the eyes. Rosacea is most common in women and people with fair skin. It usually starts between age 30 and 60. Treatments for rosacea include oral medications, topical medications and others.
Seborrheic Keratosis
These benign lesions are similar in appearance to moles, and do not become cancerous. Although they are not dangerous, they can be annoying and can be removed to improve your appearance.
Skin Cancers
The 2 most common types are basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer. They usually form on the head, face, neck, hands and arms. Another type of skin cancer, melanoma, is more dangerous but less common. James River Dermatology provides surgical removal of all types of cancerous lesions.
Skin Infections
There are many different types of skin infections – including those caused by bacteria, staphylococcus, yeast, fungi and more. While the skin normally has many types of bacteria living on it, intact skin is an effective barrier that keeps them from entering and growing within the body. When there is a break in the skin, infection can occur -- causing pain, inflammation, and a range of other symptoms.
Skin Pigment Issues
If you have blotchy and/or discolored skin on your face and neck, James River Dermatology can use a number of techniques to smooth your skin and achieve a uniform appearance.
Skin Ulcers
